The local economy

  • Aerospace
  • Transportation equipment and materials
  • Agri-food
  • Information technology

On Montréal's South Shore, a small business's cybersecurity is often decided by its customers. The Longueuil agglomeration is home to Pratt & Whitney Canada's head office and main manufacturing facility, and a study for Longueuil's economic development agency counts 85 aerospace companies and 7,689 aerospace jobs there, roughly one worker in 25. Transportation equipment and materials weigh even more: 14,000 jobs across 320 companies, according to the same source. Add agri-food (8,600 jobs, 190 companies) and information technology (4,300 jobs, 230 companies), and you get a dense web of suppliers, machine shops and processors tied to large customers.

Across the wider Montérégie region, manufacturing is the largest sector of the economy, according to Québec's statistics institute (2022 GDP). For a business in Boucherville, Saint-Hubert or Brossard, that usually means two things: a plant to protect, and customers asking harder questions about your security.

Supply chain pressure is real, and it's arriving now

Defence is the clearest case. Since April 1, 2026, Level 1 of the Canadian Program for Cyber Security Certification (CPCSC) has been available as an annual self-assessment against 13 requirements, and it has appeared in some defence contracts since summer 2026. A shop that machines parts for an aerospace prime should expect the requirement to flow down the chain.

Transportation is also on the radar. The Critical Cyber Systems Protection Act, created by Bill C-8, targets designated operators in transportation, among other sectors, and will require them to manage supplier and third-party risk. It was not yet in force as of September 2026, but suppliers should keep an eye on it: our article on Bill C-8 and suppliers explains what to watch. Confirm your situation with your legal counsel.

Either way, the expected answer is the same. Know where your sensitive data lives (technical drawings, machine programs, quotes), who can reach it, and be able to prove it.

Where South Shore businesses are most exposed

Type of businessTypical weak spotWhy it matters
Aerospace machine shopCustomer drawings in a folder everyone can openBreaches a customer's confidentiality requirements
Transportation equipment makerOffice and shop-floor PCs on one flat networkRansomware in the office can stop production
Food processorRefrigeration or labelling systems with always-on vendor accessAn outage threatens product and deliveries
IT services firmBroad admin access to client systemsOne compromise can spread to every client

The fix for the shop floor rarely means rebuilding everything. Our guide to manufacturing and OT security lays out a realistic sequence, starting with an inventory and network separation.

How the on-site visit works on the South Shore

The on-site visit is free in Longueuil, Brossard, Boucherville and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, among others; elsewhere on the South Shore, we offer a video meeting or travel on quote. In a manufacturing business, we ask to see both the office and the floor: where the network runs, which PCs drive the machines and how equipment vendors connect. The hour ends with a written summary of your three priorities. We don't run any tests and we don't touch any equipment.

Our services for South Shore businesses

A cybersecurity audit is the usual starting point. It covers governance, access, backups and the network, and it lays the groundwork for a CPCSC self-assessment or a customer questionnaire. Once the findings are clear, our remediation and hardening service helps your team or IT provider make the fixes: network separation, controlled remote access, admin accounts and backups.

Fictional example: a food processor in Saint-Hubert

A 45-person food processor loses its refrigeration monitoring for a weekend after a ransomware infection on an office PC spreads to the server that runs it. Nothing spoils, thanks to a supervisor's manual checks, but the scare prompts an on-site visit. Three priorities come out of it: the monitoring server, the label printers and the office PCs all sit on one network; the refrigeration contractor connects through remote access software that is always on; and the backups live on a storage device every PC can write to. The plan: separate networks for production and office, vendor access on request with MFA, and an offline, tested backup copy. This scenario is made up for illustration.

Frequently asked questions

Can you certify us for CPCSC?+

No. CPCSC Level 1 is a self-assessment your company completes itself every year, and Level 2 requires an assessment by an accredited body. Our job is to get you ready: compare your practices with the requirements, close the gaps and pull together the evidence your prime contractor may ask for.

Is the on-site visit free everywhere on the South Shore?+

It is free in Longueuil (including Saint-Hubert and Greenfield Park), Brossard, Boucherville and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, among others. For other municipalities, we offer a video meeting or travel on quote. The current service area is listed on our on-site visit page.

Our equipment vendor needs remote access to our production systems. How do we make that safe?+

Route all vendor access through a single, controlled tool rather than software installed here and there. Turn it on only when a session is requested, require multi-factor authentication, log every session and limit the vendor to the machines it maintains. Put those rules in the service contract so they survive staff changes on both sides.

Not just an audit: we can also apply the fixes ourselves, on-site in Greater Montréal or remotely.
